Super Slam 2007

BIG OH EDGES OUT LAST MINUTE VICTORY AT THE
2007 SUPER SLAM

It came down to the last three hours of the last day for the winners of the all release 2007 Venezuelan International Super Slam held from October 4th thru the 8th.

The 2007 Super Slam started out hot and heavy on day one with Aruba based 45’ Hatteras, ‘Iliza’, jumping out in front with a total for the day of two blue marlin, 3 white marlin and four sailfish which added 400 bonus points to their score by virtue of two team Grand Slams.  The fleet of twenty two registered boats released a total of 92 billfish on that fist day and at the end of the day Iliza was atop the scoreboard with 2,800 points, closely followed by Florida based 57’ Ricky Scarborough ‘Big Oh’ with 2,600 points and 60’ Hatteras Puerto Rican flag ‘Reel Lady’ with 2,000, setting the stage for what would eventually be a dramatic finish.

On day two the bite slowed somewhat with a fleet total of 61 releases but Iliza proceeded to add 1,600 points to their score to finish still in the lead in the overall standings, while Big Oh and Reel Lady kept pace by respectively adding 1,400 and a 1,000 points of their own.  The top three positions remained virtually unchanged at the end of the second day, although Florida boat ‘El Dooblai’, the New Jersey Viking Yachts factory boat ‘Viking 68’ with company President, Pat Heaely, leading his team, and Venezuelan boat ‘Mar Afuera’ kept themselves within striking distance by adding 1,000, 1,200 and 1,700  and Mar Afuera taking home the daily as the day’s top team.

The situation was set for an exciting finish on the third and final day.  Big Oh struck first releasing two whites but Iliza countered almost immediately releasing a sailfish and a white in the morning hours holding their lead as the mid day report was called out over the radio.   However, in the afternoon it was Big Oh’s consistency that paid off as they released four more whites while Iliza was unable to register another catch that day.  Reel Lady gained a little ground releasing three sails but it was not enough to overtake the two front runners and therefore finished third.

Anglers Gary Ingrham, Barry Daniel, Kevin Paul and Daniel Davis along with Big Oh’s Captain Ronnie Fields took home a fortune in cash and prizes including a Global Star Sat Phone, Hook and Tackle Shirts, cases of Solera Beer, Gameface Gear harnesses and Pescador Brand gift certificates. “It was the team’s first tournament in Venezuela but they sure capitalized” commented Capatain Fields.

In the Individual angler category Venezuelan Guillermo Zuloaga of Team Mar Afuera was the tournament’s High Point Angler with 1,900 points, followed by Miami Angler, Rick Benitez who fished aboard Joropo with 1,800 points, and Barry Daniel of North Carolina also with 1,800 points aboard Big Oh.  Each was awarded the Mustad Silver Hook Trophy along with some very nice luxury items.

The tournament’s totals go into the books with 126 whites, 49 sails and 18 blues for a total of 193 billfish released all caught on Ande 20-pound-test.  Four grand slams were registered during the tournament.
